Technologies to Combat Social Isolation and Loneliness

Seniors use the Internet for a variety of purposes: to access information (such as on health web sites), for entertainment, and for keeping in touch with family and friends through email, instant messaging, and desktop videoconferencing. Yet there are millions of Canadians who do not make use of such communications technology, and are isolated and lonely because they live alone, are at home providing 24/7 health care, find themselves in hospital beds for long periods of time, or are in hospice care. We are therefore developing novel technologies to combat social isolation.
