Technologies for Aging Gracefully Lab

Research for the journey through life.

We identify “sweet spots” where technology seems relevant to human need, envision ways in which technology could address those needs, then design, build, and test solutions.

Identity

Being able to draw upon your experiences is critical to lifelong learning, growth, and the development of wisdom. Tools to help you retain and share memories of your own life can support maintaining a sense of self, even in the face of memory loss or dementia. These projects are currently focused on enabling people to use digital media to reminisce and reflect upon past and recent experiences.

Autonomy

The desire for independence develops at a young age and lasts a lifetime. These projects are focused on empowering people to communicate for themselves, where brain injury, learning disabilities, or cultural issues have made language problematic, and to keep mentally, physically, and emotionally fit, in spite of physical or cognitive challenges or decline.

Community

Belonging is widely believed to be a fundamental human need. These technologies provide opportunities for social connection where the usual mechanisms need supplementing. They connect family and friends with a shared experience that accommodates different roles or levels of communication, and that bridges the gap across physical distance, social or physical limitations.

Our Projects

We work with researchers and clinicians to find ways that digital media can help people remain vigorous and independent, strengthen ties to family and community, and preserve their identity as they age.
